Thank you, Tony. Wonderful insight into fasting. I have done 10 day fasts, but not recently. However, I do intermittent fasting which has been of great benefit. Getting ready to start with 48 hour fast. As a starting point. I have managed to put 2 serious autoimmune diseases into remission and intend to keep them in remission. Have never felt better. Largely base my diet on fruit and vegetables. You inspire me to go longer --I just turned 74 and feel great.
I see that Carney has now sent Ukraine--that failed and failing state--more money and some with a debet to pay back which they will never be able to do. And he supports Israel. What a dog's breakfast we have wrought in this country. . t

I “did hunger strikes” in response to solitary confinement, and I don’t know if it improved my health, but it got me books to read.
Catcher in the Rye, the last time.
I few years back I dropped a hundred and forty pounds, half my body weight, and I have to admit that my energy was great. I did it in coordination with acupuncture.
Upton Sinclair.
The Jungle.
Brings back great memories.
I was much younger then.
Good stuff, Tony.
Maybe it’s time I give that not eatin’ stuff another look see and try.
For me my guide so far has been Upton Sinclair. I just ordered The Fasting Cure on Amazon. It has come to me that in this consumerist society the power of not consuming food for extensive periods is full of larger meanings. Such acts have been humanity's main healing ritual since time immemorial. The unease of the cancer industry with alternative treatments is well known for some time in enlightened society. Fasting for liberation from a broad array of physical and mental ailments makes a lot of sense right now especially when there is so much to detoxify from. My friend Splitting The Sky spent a lot of time in solitary confinement and emerged from the process as a holy man teacher for a time. I write about him at
Intermittent fasting in its many forms is also useful, because metabolic changes into fasting-metabolism are occurring by 12 hours, already.
There are a lot of problems in the diabetes-related illnesses that have to do with chronic carbohydrate overload, leading to fatty liver, type-2 diabetes, and so on.
Intermittent fasting may be 1-2 days per week, or as little as going 12 hours per 24 without calories, particularly if carbohydrates are exchewed for some hours prior to that.
Even giving up sweet drinks of all kinds can make a big improvement in people's health.
As I see it now, "intermittent fasting" is not really fasting. Fasting as classically understood is what happens after two or three days of not consuming food. It is at that point that the fasting person starts to cannibalize himself or herself, that is to feed on his or her own person. That's when the self-feeding process goes for the defective cells, the deformed cells, the inflammed cells. If you look up the google images of "fasting" almost every image is pretty much an advertisement for "intermittent fasting emphasizing the process is one whose duration is a matter of hours rather than of days or weeks. I did a screen shot of this phenomenon which I include near the end of the essay.
To me this replacing of what Upton Sinclair had to say about "fasting" with an abbreviated version of the process, is part of a an engineered cover up of inherent healing through prolonged abstinence from food. I visited a pharmacy in the course of a long fast and was instructed "we do not recommend fasting."
Biochemistry in the human body is fairly constantly adapting to the current internal situation. For instance, it has long been known that a person burns the highest percentage of fat and the least carbohydrate when exercising before breakfast, assuming a typical schedule of sleep and diet. At that point the body has absorbed the carbohydrates from dinner and processed them.
Carbohydrate is still stored in the musceles and liver as glycogen, which contains a fair amount of water with it in that form. Glycogen stores allow hunters to chase deer down on foot to kill at close range, as does sweating, in hot weather.
The problems with modern highly processed diets are numerous, but the fact that we remain in carbohydrate excess, without swinging the other way, into carbohydrate depletion, turns out to cause problems. It was not foreseen in our evolution, just as permanent lack of sunlight was not foreseen.
I have fasted for a full week once, and found it to be nothing-in-particular, myself. I was disappointed. I was in college and it was summer break, without meals at my co-op, and I had no money, so I tried it out...
At any rate, "the word is not the thing", as you know. I don't think "intermittent fasting" is a misuse of terminology, but one might use "extended fasting" to indicate fasts of 3 days or more, where the body really does deplete stored glycogen and has to shift into ketone metabolism.
Indications are that catabolism of unhealthy and abnormal cells does increase in the 12-24 hour "intermittent fast" window, particularly with intentional carbohydrate depletion, and or extended exercise to deplete stored carbs/glycogen.
I do this, and have long advised it as an easy change to integrate into lifestyle. I also typically ride a fixed-gear bike for 90 minutes per day and actively vegetable-garden, without chemicals.
Defaulting to long-lived human patterns of life seems like the right place to begin if one seeks to be a healthy human.
"Defaulting to long-lived human patterns of life seems like the right place to begin if one seeks to be a healthy human."
Does fasting somehow offend this basic pattern? Isn't fasting "a long-lived human pattern." There is nothing wrong and no doubt lots right with refraining from eating for long periods of daily cycles. But that's not fasting as I have come to understand it and advertising it as such seems to me change the meaning of words like has been the case with say, say, "vaccine."
"Fasting" is at the top of the fashion heap for now.
One has to deal with it — and its popping up even where you would expect it to the least.
🙄
And then, as they say, it shall pass. Nonetheless, the life standards drastic lowering that has begun and will continue in the West will mandate "fasting" as ir does for many in the rest of the world. (And it is well known how "better" both life and health are, there).
I've recently done a few 7 day fasts but couldn't go beyond that. I have never been overweight, was formerly a competitive athlete and delivered mail for 28 years which kept me fit. However, during days 5 and 6 of my fast my attention was constantly interrupted with persistent thoughts of food while trying to read....even the most engaging books. Moreover, I couldn't drink enough water to remain sufficiently hydrated and even then, was compelled to remain close to a bathroom for near constant urination.
It's extremely impressive and inspiring that you have fasted for 5 weeks with only a 3-4 day break.
It surprised me. But from reading what Upton Sinclair had to write in 1910 I was able to see that long fasts were more the rule than exception. Sinclair also described the period where you don't get that hungry.

Nazis and Jewish Zionist plutocrats get along well in Ukraine. No wonder the perverts who illegitimately rule in Canada like Zelensky so well

I intended to agree with sunlight, periods without food, and growing food to all be "long lived human patterns of life".
I'm sorry if my meaning was not clear.
"Intermittent fasting" and "extended fasting" make the meanings clear nowadays, as practices have diversified.

These days the need for detoxification is pretty overwhelming given the poisons being purposely injected into water, air, and food.
